Learning Goals
I am learning to…
Apply reading strategies so we can make meaning from a text;
Read different forms of texts;
Identify the elements of a variety of texts
Use evidence to support my ideas
Explain how specific choices an author makes in terms of conventions and stylistic features affect the reader’s understanding of the content of a text.

Today we’re going to start off with a discussion about the following statement:

Fiction reveals the truth that reality obscures.

Then you will learn a new form of literary criticism (although it’s not really new for you): Formalism.

Next, I’m going to have you read a short story, “On the Rainy River” and complete this chart on the story.

On Friday, you will write the thematic response found at the end of the chart.

Important: Make sure you integrate evidence from the text to support your ideas

Approximately 2 pages (double-spaced).

If not done at the end of class, on Friday, it’s homework.
