Introducing the ISU

Independent Study Unit (Course Summative)

Let’s review the package. Annotate the package as I go through it. It’s in its first iteration, so if there are errors or confusing parts let me know.

Update your planner with the due dates.

Go to TEAMS and complete the ANTICIPATION GUIDE on the sub-genres of utopia and dystopia.

Finally, share your thinking about this sub-genre.

Many of you blogged about the popularity of this sub-genre in post 2. For this post, I want you to make connections to the world you live in. Move past generalizations, and speak specifically about one or more distortions you see in our society.

What does the popularity of modern dystopian fiction tell us about the preoccupations of our society?

Which of the following themes do you see at work in our society? Choose one. Be specific. Provide your thinking on what might go wrong; that is, what an unintended consequence might be of any of the following ideas. What are we being warned about?

  1. The growth of surveillance, government control and industrialization
  2. The downside of human intervention in health and genetics
  3. The perils of misinformation
  4. The lack of choice and individuality
