Learning goals
I am learning to
edit writing for passive voice;
use the terminology of a literary theory accurately to explain how I interpret a text;
apply my knowledge and understanding of literary theory to interpret a text.

First, we will do some work with the passive voice.

We will apply the archetypal theory to “Things that Fly” by answering the following questions.

Review and annotate the additional handout on archetypes: Archetypal Literary Criticism.

Access this fairly lengthy package on archetypal literary theory that should serve as a good resource for you: Archetypes Unit.

1) What archetypal symbols are present in “Things That Fly”? Discuss what these symbols have meant in other contexts and then apply this to “Things That Fly.” Use your handout to help you with this.

2) Examine the hero archetype section on the Archetypes handout.  Identify and explain the ways in which the main character’s journey in “Things That Fly” corresponds to the different phases of the hero’s journey. You might choose to use the hero journey chart.

3) How are the Jungian concepts of persona, shadow, anima/animus and individuation present in this story?

We will begin the class by reviewing the course and discipline vocabulary via Quizlet.

Join Quizlet here. Once you are in the ENG3U4U class, go to the LEARN option. Attempt 30 questions. When you’re done, take a screenshot of just the score and post it to Sesame.

Today we will review both Reader Response and Archetypal literary theories.

View the slides and make notes to slide 23.
Check to see if you have the “How do you do it” support documents from last semester. If not, check on the Filing Cabinet page.

We will take up these questions tomorrow.

Friday, February 19, 2016

Today I would like you to read your novel and work on your reader’s journals, which are due on February 24.

We will continue to consider the short story “Things that Fly” by looking at some sample answers. Choose one that you agree or disagree with and be prepared to explain why.

Finally, we need to finish posting all three goals to Sesame.

I will hold small group conversations around the process of close reading.

If there is time, please work on outstanding items. Check the tracking sheet regularly.

Notes:

“What to do when you’re not the hero anymore?” question 4 is due on Friday by 3:300. Use academic language in your answers.
