Learning goals
I am learning to
use the terminology of a literary theory accurately to explain how I interpret a text;
apply my knowledge and understanding of literary theory to interpret a text

We will begin the class by reviewing the course and discipline vocabulary via Quizlet.

Join Quizlet here. Once you are in the ENG3U4U class, go to the LEARN option. Attempt 30 questions. When you’re done, take a screenshot of just the score and post it to Sesame.

Today we will review both Reader Response and Archetypal literary theories.

View the slides and make notes to slide 23.
Check to see if you have the “How do you do it” support documents from last semester. If not, check on the Filing Cabinet page.

We will apply the archetypal theory to “Things that Fly” by answering the following questions.

1) Review the additional handout on archetypes: Archetypal Literary Criticism.

1) What archetypal symbols are present in “Things That Fly”? Discuss what these symbols have meant in other contexts and then apply this to “Things That Fly.” Use your handouts to help you with this.

2) Examine the hero archetype section on the Archetypes handout.  Identify and explain the ways in which the main character’s journey in Things That Fly corresponds to the different phases of the hero’s journey.

3) How are the Jungian concepts of persona, shadow, anima/animus and individuation present in this story?

We will take up these questions tomorrow.
