Collaborative Thinking.

We have been working on setting up our workspaces and reviewing the fundamentals of English learning.

  • Quizlet;
  • Hypothes.is;
  • Annotating;
  • Commenting and Replying;
  • Grammar overview;
  • Reading for meaning: analysis and evidence;
  • Text formats: the open response format as a basic academic structure; PRACTICE THIS FORMAT
  • MLA formatting;
  • Setting up a blog;
  • Group work;
  • Collaborative thinking.

Today, I need to conference with as many of you as I can (MLA Essay feedback), so you will for the most part work independently.

First, you will listen to the podcast “Lost in Translation” and follow along in the transcript. You will annotate the text using Hypothes.is. And you will begin your thinking about the four driving questions of this course in a mind mapping tool called Mindomo.

What I liked about the Learning Strategy Presentations…..

  • how well you worked together
  • how you solved problems together
  • how you stayed calm and focused all week despite hiccups in the process
  • how you supported each other’s presentations
  • Ferris’ shout out to Ms. Griffin’s suggestion to “come back” to a problem later (interleaving)
  • Kendra’s sharing her personal example of how she used to study (risk-taking)
  • Creative use of video by the Interleaving group
  • Excellent use of slides by the Elaboration group
  • Active learning by the Retrieval Practice group
  • Active learning by the Concrete Example group
  • Excellent presentation of information by the Spaced Learning group
  • Excellent use of images by the Dual Coding group

AND ESPECIALLY how in spite of the FEAR, you chose to CREATE!

Independent Reading and updating reading log.

The Peer Evaluation form below is one I would like us to think about and work on together. In other words, what in it is appropriate for us and what needs to be revised? This will happen over the course of the semester. For now, I would like you to use it only to assess YOUR collaboration in the Learning Strategies Presentation project.

Activity #2: Setting Up Your Blog

Tuesday, February 23, 2016

Add your thinking about Canadians and tolerance.

Jigsaw is a cooperative learning strategy. We’ll give it a go today.

Maclean’s article

Person A: Read pages 1-5 (inclusive)

Person B: Read pages 6-9 (inclusive)

Person C: Read pages 10-13 (inclusive)

Person D: Read pages 14-18 (up to the Correction)

All students may read the comments on pages 18 and 19 (online) if they are waiting for other group members.

Students will…

  1. Independently, select two to three statements from their section and complete an “I read, I think, Therefore” –print or electronic–your choice. If you choose print, please do not be bound by the constraints of the page.
    1. Model
  2. Share their responses orally with their expert group (other students who have read the same section)…  Add any additional notes
  3. Share a summary of their section with their home group (students who have read a different section)

We also need to create the questions that will support the conversation with St. Robert CHS.

Based on what we have read, discussed and questioned, what questions do you want to pose to the TOK class?  Some of the questions might be general in nature, others will be closer to the content of the inquiry.

Here is a list of questions that another class sent us a few years ago. Both classes had viewed the 8th Fire, which you will view tomorrow, and both had read The Rez Sisters. The hangout was a conversation about stereotypes.

We will recieve a list of questions from St. Robert, and we need to generate a list of questions to send to them. Both classes will then vet the questions and return the edited list by Thursday night. Friday we have the conversation.

Each table open one document and create your questions. Share the document to me via the Assignment Submission page. I will merge all the questions to one documnet and share it with Ms. Loffredi.
